One of America’s most beloved cities, Chicago has always been a major financial, transportation and distribution hub for the midwestern United States and beyond. It also has a rich history of immigration, and Chicago has one of the largest immigrant populations in the country, making up 18 percent of the overall population. Like other large cities, however, Chicago has been hit hard by the recession. Poverty levels remain high, and a number of small-business owners have lost their customer bases and service workers have lost their jobs. Known for its entrepreneurial spirit and its close-knit communities, Chicago would make an ideal host city for a future Grameen America branch.
